Lyme disease is caused by infection with a spirochete, Borrelia burgdorfei, and to the body’s immune reaction to the infection. It was first recognized in the United States in the early 1970s when an unusual outbreak of childhood arthritis occurred in Lyme, Conn. Doctors subsequently discovered a borrelial organism from Ixodes ticks in these patients and established it as the causative agent.
