Cleft Lip and Palate

Birth defects that affect the upper lip and roof of the mouth. Symptoms include change in nose shape, failure to gain weight, feeding problems, flow of milk through nasal passages during feeding, misaligned teeth, poor growth, recurrent ear infections, separation of lip alone, separation of palate, separation of lip and palate and speech difficulties. Treatment option is surgery, done between three to nine months of age.
