Continuous Positive Airway Pressure
CPAP is a method of respiratory ventilation used primarily in the treatment of sleep apnea. CPAP is given through a mask that is placed and secured over the person's nose or nose and mouth. It is also useful for children with collapsible airways, small lung volumes, or muscle weakness that interferes with adequate ventilation. CPAP is also used for adults with COPD and acute respiratory failure. The treatment delivers slightly pressurized air throughout the breathing cycle, making it easier for a patient to breathe. CPAP can be used by mouth, nose, or through breathing tubes.
