End Stage Kidney Disease

A complete or near complete failure of the kidneys to function to excrete wastes, concentrate urine and regulate electrolytes. ESRD is officially diagnosed when kidney function is less than 10 percent. Symptoms of ESRD include unintentional weight loss, nausea or vomiting, general ill feeling, fatigue, headache, frequent hiccups, generalized itching, greatly decreased or no urine output, easy bruising or bleeding, blood in vomit or stools, decreased alertness, muscle twitching, seizures, increased skin pigmentation, nail abnormalities and decreased sensation in hands and feet. Diagnostic exams and tests show chronically high creatinine and Bun levels. Dialysis and kidney transplantation are the only treatments for ESRD.
