Gastric Bypass Surgery
One type of surgery that can be used to cause significant weight loss for very obese patients. The surgery reduces the body’s intake of calories by decreasing the size of the stomach and rerouting the digestive tract so that part of the stomach and small intestines are bypassed. In order to qualify for a gastric bypass surgery patients must suffer from morbid obesity; have made a significant effort at weight loss by participating in supervised weight loss programs over a long period of time, and have failed to achieve significant weight loss; have a co-morbid condition relation to obesity; be willing to take part in presurgery weight-loss efforts to improve the success of surgery; and be able to make necessary lifestyle adjustments to sustain the level of weight loss necessary to address medical conditions.
