Heart Failure

Also called congestive heart failure, it is a life-threatening condition in which the heart can no longer pump enough blood to the rest of the body. Congestive heart failure can result from coronary artery disease; past heart attack with scar tissues that interferes with the heart muscle's normal work; high blood pressure; heart valve disease due to past rheumatic fever; heart defects present at birth; and infection of the heart valves. Diagnostic tests and exams include an ECG, chest X-ray, echocardiogram, cardiac catheterization, angiography, biopsy of the heart tissue or a brain natriuretic peptide level test.
