Hepatitis
Inflammation of the liver that can be caused by parasites, bacteria or viruses; liver damage from alcohol, drugs or poisonous mushrooms; an overdose of acetaminophen; and immune cells in the body attacking the liver and causing autoimmune hepatitis. Categories of hepatitis include Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, autoimmune hepatitis, drug-induced hepatitis and alcoholic hepatitis. Symptoms vary amongst categories but may include dark urine, loss of appetite, fatigue, abdominal pain, general itching, jaundice, nausea and vomiting, low grade fever, weight loss and gynecomastia. Diagnostic exams and tests including laboratory tests for hepatitis virus serologies, liver function, autoimmune blood markers; abdominal ultrasounds; liver biopsy; and paracentesis to check for fluid in the abdomen. Treatment depends on the category and severity of the liver disease.
