Hepatitis Treatment
For hepatitis A, caused by feces entering a person’s body, there is no specific treatment. Most people fight off the virus naturally, returning to full health within a couple of months. Patients should get plenty of rest and eat a nutritious diet. For hepatitis B, which is passed on through the exchange of bodily fluids, an antiviral medication is given to those with chronic symptoms to help prevent (further) liver damage. These medications can be injected or given in pill form. Examples include Interferon, Alpha, Lamivudine and Baraclude. Treatment for hepatitis C, which causes inflammation of the liver, must be tested to determine the extent to which the liver has been affected before treatment is carried out. Testing includes a liver function test and a liver biopsy. Treatment combines the antiviral drugs Interferon and Ribavirin.
