High Cholesterol
The medical term for high cholesterol is a lipid disorder. Such a disorder occurs when a person has too many fatty substances in the blood. When there is too much cholesterol in the blood, the excess can build up on the inner walls of the arteries throughout the body, forming scar tissues and plaque. There are no symptoms or warning signs of high cholesterol levels. People with severely elevated cholesterol may have fat deposits in tendons and skin; liver and spleen enlargement; and abdominal pain. Cholesterol screening and testing is called a fasting lipid profile which everyone should do every five years, starting at the age of 20. Treatment options for high cholesterol include lifestyle changes such as diet, weight loss and exercise; and medication.
