Liver Failure

A life-threatening condition that occurs when large parts of the liver become damaged beyond repair and the liver is no longer able to function. Causes of liver failure include hepatitis B, hepatitis C, long-term and excessive alcohol consumption, cirrhosis, hemochromatosis and malnutrition. A patient with liver failure has symptoms of nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, diarrhea, jaundice, a heightened susceptibility of bleeding, swollen abdomen, mental disorientation or confusion, sleepiness or a coma. Treatment option is liver transplant surgery.
