Multiple Sclerosis
An autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. With the disease, nerve damage and inflammation occur as the body’s immune cells attack the nervous system. Symptoms vary with each attack. Diagnostic exams and tests rule out other neurologic disorders. A history of at least two attacks separated by a period of reduced or no symptoms may be a sign. Tests include head MRI scan, spine MRI, lumbar puncture and cerebrospinal fluid tests. There is no known cure for MS, however treatment options can help control symptoms and allow the patient to maintain a normal quality of life. Options include drug therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, planned exercise programs and alternative medicines like acupuncture.
