Neck Pain

Neck pain can be acute or chronic and may begin in any structures of the neck, including muscles, nerves, spinal vertebrae and cushioning discs in between. Neck pain may also originate from regions near the neck such as the shoulder, jaw, head and upper arms. Symptoms of neck pain include dull or sharp pain; stiffness in the neck; difficulty conducting daily tasks; shoulder pain; and back pain. Doctors may use X-Rays, MRI, CT scans or EMGs to establish the source of neck pain. Treatment options include over-the-counter pain relievers, rest, gentle stretching, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, injections, traction, short-term mobilization and surgery.
