Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

A unit of a hospital specializing in the care of ill or premature newborn infants. The NICU is distinct from the special care nursery in providing a high level of intensive care to premature infants. Babies who are often admitted to the NICU are born prematurely, have difficulties occur during their delivery or show signs of a problem in the first few days of life.
