Pectus Excavatum
An abnormal formation of the rib cage that gives the chest a caved-in or sunken appearance. Also called a funnel chest, pectus excavatum is a congenital abnormality that can be mild or severe. Causes range from isolated defects, familial pectus excavatum, Marfan’s syndrome and rickets. Symptoms may include chest pain, breathing trouble, decreased exercise tolerance and a redness, swelling or discharge from the chest. Diagnostic tests include laboratory tests including chromosome studies, enzyme assays, X-Rays or metabolic studies. Surgical repair is advised if associated problems, such as difficulty with exercise, develop.
