Pelvic Organ Prolapse

A condition in women that occurs when the pelvic floor muscles become weak or damaged and can no longer support the pelvic organs. Pelvic organ prolapses can occur on the anterior or posterior of the vaginal wall. Symptoms include feeling a lump or heavy sensation in the vagina; lower back pain that eases when the patient lays down; pelvic pain or pressure; and pain or lack of sensation during sex. Diagnostic tests and exams include a pelvic exam and Sims speculum. Treatment options include physiotherapy, vaginal pessaries and a range of surgical interventions.
