Sleep Apnea
A condition characterized by episodes of stopped breathing during sleep. There are many symptoms associated with sleep apnea. The predominant symptoms are usually associated with excessive daytime sleepiness due to poor sleep during the night. Diagnosis of sleep apnea requires a complete medical history, a survey regarding sleep habits. Other exams and tests include arterial blood gases, ECG, echocardiogram, sleep studies and thyroid function studies. The goal of treatment is to keep the airway open to prevent apneas during sleep. Options include lifestyle changes, such as weight loss and avoiding alcohol before bed; CPAP or other mechanical devices that keep the jaw forward; and surgery, including tonsillectomy or tracheostomy.
