Ulcerative Colitis

A type of inflammatory bowel disease that affects the large intestine and rectum. Symptoms vary in severity and may start slowly or suddenly. They include abdominal pain and cramping that usually disappears after a bowel movement; abdominal sounds; diarrhea; fever; tenesmus; and weight loss. Diagnostic exams and tests include barium enema, colonoscopy with biopsy and CBC, CRP, and ESR blood tests. The goal of treatment is to control and prevent attacks and heal the colon. Treatment options include medications, both oral and intravenous, and surgery to remove the colon.
