A.M.A. opposes government-sponsored health plan

The New York Times reports today that the American Medical Association, the nation's largest group of physicians, vehemently opposes the creation of a 'universal' public healthcare system.

According to the article, the A.M.A. stated in comments submitted to the Senate Finance Committee that: "the A.M.A. does not believe that creating a public health insurance option for non-disabled individuals under age 65 is the best way to expand health insurance coverage and lower costs."

The A.M.A. further believes that the creation of a public health plan would be a signed eviction notice for private insurers and doctors.

President Obama will make a speech next week that "outline(s) the case for health care reform and make(s) clear why we can't afford to wait another year, or another administration, to bring down costs that are crushing families, businesses and government."
