An update on public healthcare

Obviously, the buzz in the medical -- and national -- field today regards President Obama's push for public healthcare in America. While some think the plan is the bee's knees, others view it as a pesky wasp waiting to sting an already suffering nation.

Currently the panel pushing for the adoption of the public healthcare plan is looking to revise the initial $1.6 trillion price tag. Republican Charles E. Grassley of Iowa stated in a New York Times article that "we're in the position of dialing down some of our expectations to get the costs down so it's affordable...and so that it's paid for because we can't go to the point where we are now of not paying for something when we have trillions of dollars of debt."

Money politics aside, a recent New York Times/CBS News poll found that "Americans overwhelmingly support substantial changes to the health care system and are strongly behind one of the most conentious proposals Congress is considering, a government-run insurance plan to compete with private insurers."

What might this mean for private insurers? More competition for one thing. But it will also force payers to hone their focus on supplying patients with the absolute best and necessary healthcare needed; it could help reduce costs in the long run.
