Swine Flu Vaccine Update

Studies are showing that just one dose of the swine flu vaccine is effective, defying the expectations of experts and clinicians.

The results were released today (Thursday) and were based off of the first three weeks of a clinical trial.

Now the prepared flu vaccines will go twice as far as expected, since experts expected that people would need two doses. That means that it should be possible to vaccinate all the 159 million people that the CDC estimate are a part of the high-risk groups which includes pregnant women, people under 24-years-old, people caring for infants, people with high-risk medical conditions and health care workers.

Dr. John J. Treaner , a vaccine expert at the University of Rochester stated in the New York Times that, "this is definitely a big deal. People have been planning for a scenario that would require two doses. This will take an edge off the nail biting."

The fact that the flu vaccine is more effective than expected is a testament to the scientific height of today's medical research capabilities. Without trials based on evidence-based medicine and science, vaccines likes the current swine flu vaccine would not be capable.
