Hormone Therapy Increases Cancer Risk

From Reuters, as reported in the New York Times

Reuters reported today that women who took hormone replacement therapy after menopause greatly increased their chance of ovarian cancer, according to a Danish research study.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, resulted in findings that closely mirrored a 2002 Women's Health Initiative study in which was prematurely ended because women were contracting ovarian cancer. In the Danish study, hormone therapy accounted for 5 percent of ovarian cancer cases.

Perhaps the cynical statement that everything causes cancer possesses some merit. Is it possible to create treatments that don't have such severe side effects and conequences? Furthermore, do the scientific benefits of these studies outweight the consequences of them?
