The Comfort of a Diagnosis

In her latest column for the New York Times, Dr. Pauline Chen writes about the need for thinking outside of the typical medical box in order to achieve arriving at a diagnosis.

Dr. Chen writes about a book by Dr. Lisa Sanders, who pushes further into the rare and sometimes absurd depths of medical mysteries in making diagnoses...all for the comfort of the patient.

Dr. Chen writes, "But, as Dr. Lisa Sanders shows in her thought-provoking new book, “Every Patient Tells a Story: Medical Mysteries and the Art of Diagnosis” (Broadway Books, 2009), my fascination, our fascination, with diagnoses may have more to do with the importance of having a diagnosis than with the robustness of the process itself."
