AllMed Healthcare: Deciding the Medical Necessity of Insulin Pumps

4/11/2006 —AllMed Healthcare Management Medical Specialist Lyle Mitzner has recently authored a feature article “Deciding the Medical Necessity of Insulin Pumps” that is featured on the AllMed Healthcare website. The article may be viewed by clicking the following link: http://www.allmedmd.com/resources/articles/insulin.html

Insulin pumps are medical devices that continuously deliver insulin under the skin through a catheter. The amount of insulin delivered to the patient depends on the amount of carbohydrates the patient is eating and a correction factor to make sure the insulin level in the blood stays constant. In order to be a good candidate for an insulin pump, a patient must have the ability to manage the process, both the mechanical aspects of the pump, as well as being able to correct a blood sugar problem before symptoms appear.

While insulin pumps are never needed to maintain life, insurers will likely cover these devices if it can be shown that the pump will significantly improve the ability to control diabetes above and beyond the traditional insulin therapy.
