Hospital Peer Review
Hospital Peer Review is essential to raising the quality of care, enhancing patient safety and improving physician accountability and performance. Unfortunately, peer review committees that rely only on in-house personnel often lack the specialist expertise, objectivity and resources to effectively assess their physician staff. Tight-knit social and professional relationships lead to conflicts of interest and reluctance to pass judgment on associates. Furthermore, hospital peer review does not consistently receive high priority in the busy schedule of medical staff. Pushed to the bottom of the list, evaluations are either untimely or don't get done at all.
The 2007 Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) standards require hospitals to implement more rigorous evidence-based credentialing and privileging procedures, through focused and ongoing professional practice evaluations. The drive toward Pay For Performance, greater transparency and physician accountability all point toward the increased use of external peer review as an integral part of a hospital’s peer review process.
AllMed's Hospital Peer Review services ensure the objective review of credentials, privileges, sentinel events and sensitive performance issues that arise from time to time, and which are best dealt with by an Independent Review Organization (IRO). In addition, the proactive and systematic review of practice areas by AllMed’s external peer reviewers is being adopted as a Best Practice by leading hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) and specialty medical groups.
- All external peer reviews are conducted by board-certified specialists who are in active practice in the same medical specialty as the review which is being conducted.
- You can rely on objective, evidence-based decisions from independent peer reviewers with no relationship to the treating physician.
- Hospital Peer Reviews are completed within 21-28 business days, improving the timeliness of your organization’s quality management process.
